Beckenham Lawn Tennis Club… Our History….

Beckenham Lawn Tennis Club is one of the oldest and most prestigious lawn tennis clubs in the United Kingdom, forming part of the wider Beckenham Cricket Club estate established in 1866. Lawn tennis was introduced at Foxgrove Road in November 1879, marking the beginning of a long and distinguished sporting history.

Early Development
The tennis section initially began with just three grass courts. Over time, the club expanded significantly and now includes a wide range of playing surfaces including grass, acrylic, artificial clay, and macadam courts. This growth reflects the club’s commitment to maintaining both tradition and modern standards.

Growth and Contribution to Tennis

The club has played an important role in the development of lawn tennis in England. It became a founder member of the Kent Lawn Tennis Association and opened its membership to women as early as 1880, demonstrating progressive inclusion for the time.

Major Events and Recognition

Beckenham Lawn Tennis Club gained prominence through the Kent All-Comers’ Championships, first held in 1886. The event developed international recognition and eventually became one of the most important grass court tournaments in the UK.

Facilities and Evolution

The club has undergone several structural developments, including clubhouse rebuilds, pavilion construction, and expansion of court surfaces. Notably, floodlights were introduced in 1984, marking a modernisation step for year-round play.

Notable Players and Members
The club has attracted numerous world-class players and honorary members, including Maria Bueno, John Newcombe, Vijay Amritraj, and Pam Shriver, reinforcing its reputation as a key venue in the tennis calendar.
