VETS FOOTBALL AT BECKENHAM

We have hosted football at Foxgrove since 2001 when the General Committee decided to allow the sport to be played on the ground.

The Football Section subsequently came into being, with two Veterans teams from the old Wellcome Sports Club playing here on Sunday mornings.

The Wellcome teams came from the Langley Court site where the sport had flourished since the 1920’s. In it’s heyday Wellcome Sports FC had 2 Saturday League sides, 3 Sunday League sides, a Veterans XI and a Super Vets XI. When GSK took over The Wellcome Foundation in 1995 the new company decided to phase out sport at the Beckenham site, this resulted in the football sides moving firstly to the Lloyds Bank ground and then to Old Wilsonians ground before settling at Foxgrove.

They were joined in 2005 by Catford Exiles Veterans, a team comprised of former Catford Wanderers players who decided to ‘go their own way’ after a minor dispute with their home club. The Section played some early ‘friendlies’ against the rest of the Club which helped the football fraternity settle in quite quickly, these games are to be revived during this Centenary year.

During the start of the 2017/18 season we welcomed Orpington Vets who play their home games at Foxgrove on Sunday mornings.

Football is now well established at Foxgrove and appears to continue doing so for some time. The Club is open to all members over the age of 35 (veterans) or for those of more advanced years, over 45 (super vets), there is no upper limit on age, as some of our players are in their sixties.

Should you wish to play or need more information, then please get in touch.
