Club Update - Football's Coming Home

I just about remember the 1966 England squad, but most especially Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and Tofik Bakhramov (Google it!). Obviously being so young at the time (!) I cannot quite recall the excitement of the nation and what was going on in the news.

Tonight, England have the opportunity to get through to another Wembley-based final and we will have the match across all three screens in the bars for your delectation. And Mark Pulford will be firing up the barbecue to provide buns, burgers and bangers to ease those nervous stomachs before the game and, he says quite correctly, until half-time when he wants to down tools and watch the second half.

I can say, without fear of contradiction, there was no pandemic in progress at the time that football ‘was coming home’ last time. But with, Boris’ speech on Monday about the easing of lockdown measures on the 19th July, I feel I must remind Members that we are not free from those restrictions just yet.

So, this evening and any other time you will be attending the Club before so called Freedom Day I must remind you –

• Masks are mandatory on the premises (for some Members I will confirm that mandatory means ‘must’ wear a mask)

• Social distancing is still in place (even when England score)

• Table service is in place, so no queues at the bar!

• If you have any of the published symptoms of COVID please watch on a TV in your own home rather than risk infecting others

I realise that some of the above might be difficult – especially the celebrating bit when England score – but please keep yourself and those around you safe.

Apparently footballs coming home and when you go home, please leave quietly.
